In the winter of 2003, Mike Wiginton and Joe Hughes come up to Scott Amos after a Tiger basketball game and asked Scott if he wanted to help them start a car club.
April 2004, six guys came together to start Stewie Cruisers Car Club. The original officers were Joe Hughes as President, Mike Winginton as Treasurer, and Scott Amos as Secretary.
May 2004, the decision was made that their kick off would be a car show held on the 4th of July. Little did they know this would become an annual event and one of the largest shows in SE Minnesota.
With the car show in Hastings on Saturday night and the Fraternal Order of Eagles considering a Wednesday night show, Friday night was chosen since it was the end of the work week giving participants and fans the weekend to themselves.
June 2004, the membership expanded from 6 to 10 members.
July 4th , 2004. The Car Show drew over 65 entrants.
Because of the huge success of the car show, the club members decided to start planning cruises. They would host the event the first three Friday evenings of each month at the Riverview Greens Golf Course in Stewartville.
And the members thought the 4th of July Car Show was a success? In August 2004 over 150 were in attendance for the first Club Cruise. The club members knew they had winning idea. By January 2005, the Club decides to go nuts and the official “Friday Night Cruise In” was born.
March 2005 – Club membership reaches 20 members. The location, times, and sponsors for the Cruise In were confirmed. By April 2005, the area radio stations (LASER 101.7 FM, FOX Country 102.5 FM, and The FAN 970 and 1270 AM) began advertising the event upcoming event.
May 13, 2005, the first ever Cruise In was held at Strikers Corner in Stewartville. Although the night was rather chilly (about 45◦) about 50 cars joined in the fun. By the following week, the Cruise In had grown to over 130 cars.
The 2nd Annual 4th of July Car Show in 2005, doubled attendance at over 145 cars from all over the tri-state area.
The Stewie Cruisers Friday Night Cruise In was featured in the July 2005 issue of Hemmings Muscle Machine as one of the best cruise nights for 2005.
Years later, the Stewie Cruisers Friday Night Cruise In continues every Friday night May through September at the same original location. Each year the number of cars and types of cars gets better and bigger.
Each year has gotten bigger and better including member cruises and special event nights with different themes for each event like Military, Ford, Chevy, Mopar, Dodge, Tuner Nights and Possibilities (held in the past) to our current Bike, Semi, 4x4/Mudder, and Family Nights. Each event trying to highlight a special interest not only for our club members and other clubs, but for the spectators that join us during each Friday Night Cruise In.
